Intercultural Individual Coaching

Training with groups provide good conditions for improving knowledge and skills, and to facilitate dialogue to bridge a cultural gap. Individual conversations are a very valuable complement to this. Also if there is no group available, individual intercultural coaching is a good idea. Several options are available.

Practical application

Intercultural one-to-one coaching allows you to apply cultural insights in detail to the exact circumstances you find yourself in. What might be the best way to interpret situations and what are the strategies to deal with them most effectively?

Personal pitfall and strength

One-to-one coaching also provides space for individual work. As cultural differences often manifest themselves on an emotional level (feelings of irritation, frustration, anger, betrayal et cetera), it is possible to delve a little deeper into your personal pitfalls and ways to deal with or avoid these feelings.

We provide the following coaching services

Preparation for a (business) trip

Settling in another cultural environment

When the going gets tough

Family Coaching

Preparation for a (business) trip or visit

Are you going abroad for a short period of time or are you hosting someone from a different background soon? Then it is possible to book just one or two coaching sessions in preparation for this. Together, we will explore what your goals are and how you can best achieve them in the culture you are about to enter. Are you going to look for a new (business) partner, visit a client or negotiate? Are you going to visit a project and need to review and fine-tune some things? After individual discussions with an intercultural coach, you will be well prepared to go out.

Settling in another cultural environment

Are you settling in a new country? Then you will make a better start if you get individual coaching during the first (half) year of your stay abroad (usually in series of four sessions). This combination brings together knowledge and real-world experience. Being able to deal with completely new situations, build relationships with the people around you (such as customers, government agencies, partners, suppliers and employees), and keep these relationships effective when emotions flare up is not easy for everyone. Recall that 40 per cent of expats return home prematurely ‘because they fail to adapt to different local values and behavioural norms’ (Bennett, Aston, & Colquhoun, 2000). Other studies show similar results.

When the going gets tough

Culture requires lifelong learning. Whether you have lived in a country other than your motherland for a few years, or have travelled the world and stayed in many different countries, culture remains complex. You may suddenly find yourself in a situation where you need a seasoned intercultural sparring partner to support you in the process. Don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Family Coaching

Are you leaving abroad with your partner or family? Then coaching for accompanying partners, and possibly accompanying children, is an option.

Saskia Maarse is a Dutch intercultural speaker, trainer and author. For six years, she researched how Dutch culture is experienced by people from other cultures. She did so through in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs and managers from 30 different countries. She wrote two books on the subject: Tutti frutti – Success in a colourful and entreprising Netherlands and Onder de zeespiegel – collaborating and living together with the Dutch.

Saskia’s fascination for cultural differences started at a young age. She worked in tourism for over ten years, including several years in France, Spain, Italy and Austria. Her work experience abroad and her subsequent trip around the world broadened her view of the world and its inhabitants. Her research provided Saskia with much: more cultural awareness and extensive knowledge about Dutch culture in relation to other cultures.

Saskia’s mission is to provide as many people and organisations as possible with cultural insights and awareness in an accessible and inspiring way, so that more understanding of different cultures is created.

“During our team building day in Openluchtmuseum Arnhem we have had the pleasure to enjoy a very interesting cultural awareness workshop focussing on the Dutch culture in comparison with other cultures, how other cultures see us Dutch and what we can learn with the 6 principles of intercultural working from Saskia Maarse. The diverse group that we were with 25 people, 6 nationalities and even more cultures (including Frisian and Limburg) were really enthusiastic and even more understood the importance of good communication (verbal and visual) in international business.”
